St. Magnus Cathedral, Kirkwall, Orkney Islands, Scotland, U.K.

Dominating the skyline of Kirkwall, St. Magnus Cathedral—affectionately known as the "Light in the North"—is the most complete medieval cathedral in Scotland and a striking testament to Orkney's Norse heritage. Founded in 1137 by the Viking Earl Rognvald in honor of his martyred uncle, Saint Magnus, the cathedral took roughly 300 years to fully construct. Built primarily in a magnificent Romanesque style using contrasting bands of local red and yellow sandstone, its soaring arches and massive round stone pillars evoke the stonework of Durham Cathedral. Uniquely, the cathedral is owned by the people of Kirkwall rather than the church, granted by a charter from King James III of Scotland in 1486. Today, its walls house centuries of island history, from 17th-century carved gravestones and memorials to Arctic explorer Dr. John Rae, to the entombed relics of St. Magnus himself built directly inside one of its central choir pillars.
